John Pope Ivess
Born 1817 Askeaton, Ireland.
John Pope Ivess was the son of Patrick and Jane Ivess. Most of the details recounted here have been researched from old documents and family history. Some of the details are by necessity only presumed to be accurate.
John’s first wife was Anne Southwell.
He was the son of Patrick & Jane Ivess and had two brothers and four sisters that we know of. Brother Cornelius remained in Askeaton where the descendants remain to this day. One brother Patrick and four sisters Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Ellen emigrated to the USA.
JP was married to Anne Southwell and they produced several children
William, Jane, Joseph, Helena, Annie, Lucy & Albert. ( It would seem that Ann died giving birth to Albert in Dublin 1852) Following her death JP emigrated to Australia on the sailing ship Alcyon via Liverpool in 1852 in the company of another lady also named Ann This Ann sailed as Ann “Ivess” although it was later proven that she was from Liverpool. Passengers assumed they were man and wife.
The family arrived in Victoria in 1852 were they settled in Emerald, Melbourne where John worked as a police sergeant.
